In “PSPU”, the material is allowed to shape the material. Instead of the designer interfering and trying to give shape, the respective materials spontaneous reactions are the agents creating the expression.
Researching how plastics react to certain chemical and physiological interference, the uncontrollable reaction is allowed to dictate the outcome. In an otherwise complicated texture to replicate, allowing the material to be in control, gives the lamp “PSPU” a unique feel and visual appearance unachievable by traditional means of shaping.
The material research aimed to explore the potential that the plastic compounds has. Named after the two contributing materials, Polystyrene and Polyurethane, the former is allowed to shape the latter. Altering the physical appearance of polystyrene through uncontrollable chemical reactions gave shape to the intricate patterns later found in the polyurethane. With the help of light, the pattern becomes illuminated and its frailty used as an aesthetical attribute.
