With a starting point in philosophical sustainability in terms of students’ work within the Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE), “Design for Biological Equity” aims to prove how design research can have an impact on the things it adresses. Instead of stepping back and representing, it tries to engage with the topic of research.
Researching the most honoured (cum laude) graduation work of DAE, the research tried to understand what set these projects apart from others or what qualified them as cum laude. With the help of interviews from the creative leadership of the academy and literature, it became clear that it was a question regarding defining the values of the academy. How are these values then reflected in the selection of the works and relfected in the teaching of the academy?
Pushing students through having multiple courses and projects at once, one is forced to focus on certain things and not others. In many of the cases a polished surface and a presentable end seems to trump a thorough concept.
With this in mind, the design outcome is a suggestion to the board of education of the DAE on how to implement the educational changes planned for the semester of autumn 2022 in order to promote a more thorough mindset of the students and allowing more space and time for focus.
