Emma, named after the source of inspiration, is an exploration of what place traditional expressions and crafts can have in a modern context. Sudying carpentry and furniture design history leads one to be heavily influenced or overexposed to what has come before. Many of these means of expression, such as textures and patterns, are being rejected due to public opinion on modernity. At the same time, industry is favouring means of production that can be automated.
In Emma, the more traditional means of expression and crafts are explored in a contemporary frame of proportions. Handwoven, making the process of producing the seat cost inefficient, is adding to the now outdated idea of slowness in furniture prodution. Using color to highlight functionality and durability aims to pull the viewers eye towards details that are not developed for aesthetical purposes.
The wooden frame is made from locally sourced ashwood treated with linsseed oil to prevent deterioration. The seat is handwoven from linen yarn produced in close proximity to the place of production.
