Inbetween is a material and aesthetical research that explores the behaviour of curves in furniture. What can they support, both in terms of weight and look?
Birch wood, a well explored species of wood when it comes to furniture making, is here pushed to its limit in order to see its capacity when it comes to shock absorbance and flexibility while maintaining strength as a load-bearing element. The oversized wooden curves are complemented by a steel structure supposed to mimic the look and feel of a shopping cart, carrying the ones seated. Function and joinery is exaggerated through color coding certain elements.
Using locally sourced birch veneer and scrap metals with semi-fixed joints the bench becomes very easy to recycle if necessary. The construction is easy to dismantle and flatpacks for transportation and storage. At testing the bench was able to support 300 kg of applied weight.
The bench was exhibited at Stockholm Furniture And Light Fair 2020
